Another scary chart
Here's a frightening chart: it shows total US credit market debt (money that has been borrowed by all levels of government, as well as by corporations, and individuals) as a percentage of US gross domestic product (GDP = the total dollar value per year of all goods and services- that is, a measure of how much 'value' there is as measured by how much has actually been paid for stuff). Basically, it is like measuring how much you owe versus how much you spent in a year. Although most people owe more than they spend in any year (easy to do if you have a mortgage), it is generally not good to owe many times more than you can spend...you can't reasonably borrow a million dollars if you have only $50K per year of spending power, because you will never make enough to pay it back.
Look at the Great Depression years, then the years in-between, then the current time.
Yikes.

Noby Noby Boy
I love this slightly bewildered pre-review (from BoingBoing's new gaming blog) of Noby Noby Boy, the upcoming PS3 game by Keita Takahashi, the guy who made the fabulous but bizarre Katamari Damacy.
Apparently the new game is so bizarre it's hard to describe. When you read an attempt at description you can understand why: "the fundamentals are simple: you control a Noby 'BOY' [who looks like a long snake] with both analog sticks: one for the head, one for the tail, flexing, stretching, and eventually tying yourself in knots, in a playground world that's otherwise devoid of goals."

Evolving Mona Lisa
This guy wrote a genetic program (a computer program that uses natural selection to solve problems) that simulated/replicated the Mona Lisa using 50 semi-transparent polygons. I wonder if any human would have been able to figure out how to do that?

Confirmed: Scientists Understand Where Mass Comes From | 80beats | Discover Magazine
"Particle physics explains that the bulk of atoms is made up of protons and neutrons, which are themselves composed of smaller particles known as quarks, which in turn are bound by gluons. The odd thing is this: the mass of gluons is zero and the mass of quarks [accounts for] only five percent. Where, therefore, is the missing 95 percent?"

Warfare 1917
Warfare 1917 is a twist on a Tower Defense game, set in World War I. Instead of defending towers you try to defend your trenches and take more territory. I had a very hard time making it past Level 2, but then I seemed to get the hang of it.

Android launches
The T-Mobile G1 phone, the first Android phone (running Google's open source operating system) was just released. I think things will get interesting very fast now in the cell phone world: although v.1.0 of the phone is not going to be perfect, Android's integration with Google's stuff, especially Google maps, combined with GPS in the phone, allows the phone to do some interesting new things. We are going to start to see phones extending the web, not just accessing it. Check out the Android application showcase. Not available in Canada...yet.
