A little bit of history

They are auctioning off a mint Apple I computer, expected to sell for $161,600 - $248,200. This machine came out in 1976, with 8K of RAM and a computer that ran at 1 Mhz. The computer I wrote this on has a million times more RAM and has two processors that run over 2500 times faster.

The man who sold a $22 billion share in Apple for $800

Ron Wayne co-founded Apple with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. At the beginning he owned 10% of the company. Today that 10% would be worth $22 billion. Alas, Wayne sold his 10% back for $800 before Apple succeeded. A rough investment decision! More details at CNN here.

Control your Mac with a Wiimote

Check out these instructions for controlling your Mac with a Wii remote. I'm not totally sure why you'd want to, but you can! (You could control iTunes from a distance, which could be handy.)

I enjoy the instructions: "Once you have the Wii Remote, be sure to take it out of the package and put the batteries in it. "

New iPods

Apple announced some new iPods yesterday. They are trying to position the iPod Touch more as a game-playing device (Steve Jobs even said so), and most of the changes to the 3rd generation iPod Touch are to that end: it has a faster processor and new graphics capabilities. It also has more storage, up to 64 Gbs. Prices as shown (American dollars, of course). More, as ever, at Gizmodo.com, from whence the image. Apple also announced new iPod Nanos, with an FM radio and a video camera.

Apple orders 10-inch touchscreens for third quarter

Rumours have been around for a while that Apple was developing a 'netpad', essentially a cross between an iPod touch and a notebook computer. This seems to be more likely than ever now that there is news that Apple has ordered 10-inch touch screens:

"Apple will take third-quarter delivery of newly developed 10-inch touchscreens from Taiwan, a source said on Wednesday, amid talk the U.S. firm is developing a touchscreen PC.

Taiwan touchscreen specialist Wintek already makes small screens for Apple iPhones, and has received orders for the larger ones that are roughly the same size as those used in mini PCs, said the source close to the Taiwan firm. He asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to talk to the media."

The image shows Apple's first touchscreen device, the failed Newton, which came out before the technology was really ready for it. It sucked.
