How an engine works


Amazing footage taken inside a piston of an engine as it is running, with 1000 frames per second (so time is slowed down when we play it back- the real thing happens much much faster that what we are seeing).

Basically what you see is gas being allow into the piston chamber, then being ignited so that it explodes and pushes the piston down. After that the burned gas (exhaust) is sucked out and the whole thing repeats.

It doesn't show here but the piston is pushed up by the same process taking place in another cylinder: pushing down there pushes the piston up in our cylinder because they are attached to a rotating piece (the crankshaft) like this:
