The Khan Academy


I love what this guy is doing: Salman Khan has recorded over a thousand ten-minute lectures on every topic in the K-12 curriculum (and quite a bit beyond that), and they are all free. There are tons of math lectures. He is doing it primarily as labor of love, not for profit. I hope he gets very rich off it anyway; he deserves it.  Amazing and inspiring to see. Check out the Khan Academy.

Belief in evolution in the US, by education level


Only 40% of Americans believe in evolution (in Canada it's 59%). Among the least educated, it is 21%. Among the most educated it is 74%. Click the image for more details.

Visual Math proofs

1 + 3 + 5 + ... + (2n − 1) = n * n

I have always loved visual math proofs like these. The one above proves that the sum of 2n - 1 for any integers ranging from 1 to n is n squared. I think it is very important to understand that problems that seem hard under one representation may seem very easy if they are represented another way: sometimes we can solve problems just by changing the way we look at them.

Nicolo Tartaglia


Nicolo Tartaglia was the first to find the general method for all types of cubic equations, which include an unknown that is cubed. Tartaglia did not understand, however, that the full solution to these equations requires one to take the square root of a negative number.
