xbcd Comics

xbcd is a popular online comic strip that accurately describes itself as "a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language". Its solid mix of thoughtful insights and geeky humor had me laughing out loud several times.

507 Mechanical Movements

http://507movements.com/mm_038.html
507movements.com is a cool site that is hosting "an online edition of the classic technical reference Five Hundred and Seven Mechanical Movements by Henry T. Brown [...] published in 1908." The coolest part is that they are animating all the mechanisms so you can see exactly how they work. Not too many are animated yet, but they are coming along. Shown: Number 38, a way of making rotary motion vary in speed during the revolution. Via: BoingBoing

Google Ngram Viewer

The Google Ngram Viewer is a cool tool that allows the comparison of a list of words with a graph of their % use in literature over time. Pictured is a comparison of "guerre et amour" from the french corpus. Notice the spike in the 1910s during world war 1 likely because of the Schlieffen Plan.
